With over 20 years combined experience at London’s top design agencies (including Form and Neville Brody’s Research Studios), Nick Hard and Jeff Knowles have teamed up to follow their dream of launching a leading creative design studio, Planning Unit.

In the 1960s, co-founder Nick Hard’s grandfather ran a design studio of the same name. This first incarnation of Planning Unit found its early success working alongside Knoll Furniture.With Planning Unit reimagined for 2011, it too will be launching with Knoll Furniture as a key client.

We’re pleased to announce that Jeff & Nick are bringing their vast expertise to the Memories project by contributing two pieces to the final book. This is the third time the pair have collaborated with DAHRA and it is a pleasure to have them on board.

We’re pleased to announce that Bibliothèque Design are continuing their working relationship with DAHRA by joining the Memories project. Renowned for their excellent typographic and design skills, they’ve put their incredible creativity to work for prestigious clients such as D&AD, Design Museum, Covent Garden, Dieter Rams & Vitsœ and Moving Brands.

Having previously worked on DAHRA’s 3Minutes project and donated items for auction at Play.Create, Bibliothèque have been invaluable contributors and we’re extremely excited to have them board!

The Memories team is pleased to announce that we have the wonderful and talented Shane S Mielke on board! Known for his excellent and web-defining work as creative director at 2Advanced, Shane in recent years has also developed a reputation as a great illustrator. Combining his varied design skills with passion and commitment, his work is vibrant, emotive and stunning.

Shane has worked alongside DAHRA in the past in it’s DATA project and has agreed to become a contributor to Memories. You can see more his work here and I’m sure you’ll all agree that working with Shane is a very exciting prospect!

Memories team member Rishi Sodha, founder of Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA), has created his own dream version of the Memories book. Using the stories and images we have in so far, he has assembled a prototype of Memories with an incredible faux leather embossed cover, and bound it by hand. Pushing his layout skills to the max and printing it on a luscious, pulpy paper stock, he’s created a marvellous object and shown just how awesome the images our artists have created will look in print.

Unfortunately, this wondrous creation won’t be available to buy. We would never be able to mass produce it, and we’d never be able to sell it at a price that fits within the budget of our target market. Our aim is to make as much as we can for Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres, and we are very aware of production costs. But… isn’t it a beauty? And it’s given us loads of printing and layout ideas to hopefully apply in the on-sale version of the book. Tomorrow we’ll show you some early mocks of the layouts we’ve been working on.

We have big news for the project as well. Despite the hard economic times, we have found a printer and a paper supplier for Memories. We hope to unveil more details about both these companies next week. And, we have briefed a cover artist. Thanks to the widespread praise our theme image received, we’ve asked the same gentleman, Luke O’Neill, to make a new, souped up cover image, using the same techniques. We’ll tell you more about that next week as well.

Finally, we can announce that we hope to launch Memories priced at £10 in July. Plans are afoot for an awesome launch. Watch this space, and thank-you for your patience and support.

His work has a hint of free association about it, and his personal stuff explores connections between the realms of beauty and horror; innocence and evil. Ventza is the alias of a contemporary, London based mixed media artist. He has been specialising in spray can art for over a decade and applies his finely tuned graffiti techniques to a range of different mediums. Having exhibited nationwide alongside some of the most talented individuals of the moment, Ventza continues to push his work into new and exciting directions.

Also you can check him out at the ‘Brighton Freakshow’ which is a carefully hand selected illustration show exhibiting some of Brighton’s finest image making talent. Appropriately housed in the epic setting of St. Peters Church, Freakshow will form part of the 2010 Open House Festival in Brighton, UK. The exhibition is curated by Johnny McCulloch and Mega Munden.
The Exhibition will run every saturday throughout May between 10am and 5.30pm.

DAHRA (Designers Against Human Rights Abuse), Subism and an editorial team led by Garrick Webster have teamed together to create a new project entitled Memories in aid of Maggie’s Centres, a UK based cancer charity.

Maggie’s Centres can be found at various hospitals across the UK and offer advice, support and counselling to those who are suffering from cancer and their families. It is their fundamental belief that the healing process goes beyond that of just medical treatments and it is this holistic approach that led their London centre to win the British Sterling Prize in 2009 (Britain’s best building).

Memories is honoured to support such a worthwhile charity and the work they do through creating a book that comprises of 12 personal accounts of peoples’ experience with cancer and 144 wonderful pieces of art based on these. However, unlike previous projects, 24 of these pieces are being left open to Open Submissions, with the best 24 entries being featured in the book and subsequent exhibition. It’s an excellent opportunity for new and upcoming artists, designers and illustrators to contribute to a great cause. Those entries that unfortunately do not make it into the book will be featured online as we appreciate all the time and effort you put in, but due to budgetary constraints we can only select 24.
