Well, you can’t be the editor of a book filled with illustration and go to a major illustration awards ceremony and NOT network with illustrators, right? When I went to Images 34 the other night, it was a great opportunity not only to see a whole range of interesting work but I got the chance to meet some illustrators who I’ve covered in the past but never met in the flesh. One of them was Simon Pemberton, whose work was featured in an article about book illustration I did for Computer Arts Projects a couple of years ago. He’d just won the gold award in book illustration for his imagery for The Folio Society’s reprinting of Songlines by Bruce Chatwin. Simon’s work is enchanting – simple yet full of depth. Maybe it’s because of the way he uses tone and colour, and the juxtaposition of space and detail? And maybe I sound like a puff-ball art critic saying things like that?

Anyway, yesterday I dropped Simon a line and invited him to be a part of Memories, and he said ‘yes’. He’s had quite a bit of personal experience of cancer, losing a grandfather to leukaemia and an aunt to cancer as well. We were very sorry to hear that. However we’re really pleased that Simon will be creating something for Memories. Please check out his portfolio here. The image you see above is one of the many amazing pieces he did for Songlines.

Great to see a number of artists who are contributing to Memories having their commercial work shown at Images 34, the Association of Illustrators annual show held at London College of Communication last night. I went along and it was great to Simon Spilsbury in attendance to pick up a bronze award for one of his pieces in the advertising category. Andy Potts also won – he got a bronze in design for packaging. I also saw work on the walls by Good Wives & Warriors and Yulia Brodskaya who have also contributed to Memories.

Overall, the winners were, in gold, silver, bronze order:
Critic’s award: David Hughes
Advertising: Rachel Tudor Best, Yuko Shimizu, Simon Spilsbury
Books: Simon Pemberton, Jonathon Burton, Niroot Puttapipat
Children’s books: Chris Haughton, Jason Chapman, James de la Rue
Design: Jonathan McHugh, Jill Calder, Andy Potts
Editorial: James Fryer, Peter Grundy, Bill Butcher
New media: Steve May, Action Stations, Frances Castle
Self promotion: Stuart McReath, Olivier Kugler, Ian Henderson

It was an exciting show and it’s on until 14 Sept so if you can get down to Elephant & Castle, check it out. The show is accompanied by the AOI’s Images 34 book which contains 400 works by 240 illustrators and is a very nicely compiled tome of contemporary British illustration. There’s more info here.

To everyone who’s sent in their image – both the commissioned ones who we’ve contacted directly and the open submission work – we’d like to send out our thanks. Everyone has pulled out an interesting visual angle, we’ve received some incredibly crafted and clever work, and we wouldn’t hesitate to say that Memories is going to be one of the most inspiring illustration books of the century. All the more so because of the subject matter, the way our illustrators have tackled it, and the fact that it will make a big difference to our charity beneficiary, Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres.

To everyone whose image we’re still waiting for… well, the clock is ticking. We don’t mean this in a nasty way or anything like that, we know you’re busy pros, but if you can’t get it in to us by 3rd September then unfortunately we’re going to have to drop you from the line-up and that would be a darned shame. So, for both commissioned work and for open submissions, please hit us with your image by 3rd September 2010.

So, signing off, we’d just like to say that the Memories plan is coming together. Watch this space…

all the best
Here’s a nice story. Memories contributor Simon Spilsbury told fellow illustrator/designer Patrick Walker that he was doing an image for Memories, and shortly afterwards we got an email from Patrick asking to get involved. His studio, Dust, do some amazing work in illustration and print design so we really wanted to get them on board. Luckily, we had a story slot for them and we sent off a brief. So we’re welcoming Patrick, Pamela and Alun at Dust to the project. Can’t wait to see what they come up with. Please check out their website here.

We’d like to send our thanks to the folks at Digital Artist who included a story of about 1.5 pages on Memories in issue nine of their magazine. Check out pages 16 and 17 for a great story about the project including Luke O’Neill’s theme image for Memories, and also images by Sarah Yates, Nancy Mungcal, Adhemas Batista, Brand Nu, Tom Bagshaw and Andy Potts. We also squeezed in a shout-out to Popshot’s Jacob Denno. I was extensively quoted in the magazine (ie Garrick says…) which is odd for me. Usually I’m on the other end of the mic, doing the quoting. Anyway, hats off to Digital Artist and journalist Natalie Johnson for their support.
